What YOU Need to Do to Get the Second Stimulus Check, Extended Unemployment
Story updated: In case you haven’t heard, Congress has tentatively agreed on another COVID stimulus program.
Here’s what the stimulus package includes:
Firstly, it provides a $600 payment to eligible people. Eligibility is based on income, and has not yet been disclosed.
Secondly, a $600 payment per child for eligible children.
Thirdly, an 11-week addition to unemployment benefits in the amount of $300 per week, from Mid December to Mid March. The Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program also provides an additional 13 weeks of payments to those who exhaust their regular state benefits. Both applications would close in Mid March and phase out in April.
Fourthly, the Paycheck Protection program allows small businesses hit hardest by the pandemic to apply for loans so they can keep paying employees. There’s $12 billion designated for minority-owned and very small businesses. There’s an additional $15 billion for live venues, independent movie theaters and cultural institutions. And, it makes more nonprofits, newspapers, TV and radio broadcasters eligible.
Fifthly, there’s support for educational entities including K-12 and higher learning institutions. And, there’s help for child care hit hard by the pandemic.
Sixth, rental assistance is available, and eviction protection will extend through January 31.
Seventh, SNAP benefits will increase even though applications to receive them will not reopen. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, is what’s formerly known as food stamps. EBT programs will be supplemented, as will Food Banks, the Emergency Food Assistance Program, Meals on Wheels and similar programs, and the Commodity Supplemental Food program for older Americans.
Finally, the bill funds vaccines for people who cannot afford them as well as distributing vaccines. And, further COVID-19 testing is funded.
Original story follows from December 18, 2020:
Second Stimulus Check in the Works
According to NBC, the new stimulus package will include enhanced federal jobless benefits, small-business funding, and money to distribute Covid-19 vaccines. The dollar amount of the stimulus payments has not yet been determined — some say it will probably be $600 per person while others said it may be higher. Rumors have been circulating with payments being as high as $2,000 per person.
Today, members of both Republican and Democrat party sound more hopeful than they have in months of coming to an agreement.
