What is National POW/MIA Recognition Day?
POW stands for Prisoner of War, and MIA stands for Missing in Action.
Observances of National POW/MIA Recognition Day are held across the country. In places such as on military installations, ships at sea, state capitols, schools and veterans’ facilities. It is traditionally observed on the third Friday in September each year. This is one of six days throughout the year that Congress has mandated the flying of the National League of Families’ POW/MIA flag. The others are Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day.
The flag is to be flown at major military installations, such as: national cemeteries, all post offices, VA medical facilities, and the World War II Memorial. In addition, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Also, the official offices of the secretaries of state, and defense and veterans affairs. And finally, the director of the selective service system and the White House.
Additionally, a Pentagon ceremony features members of each branch of military service on National POW/MIA Recognition Day.
