What is a class action lawsuit settlement?
A class action lawsuit is one with multiple plaintiffs. In other words, there are more than one person being represented by the lawsuit. Oftentimes a plaintiff or plaintiffs file the case on behalf of many people who were affected by aren’t involved in the actual suit. For example, if you purchased an item that was later determined to be involved in a class action lawsuit, you may be entitled to compensation.
If you’re included in the class or group of people affected, then you can file a claim to receive money, coupons or replacement products. Each case is different, and each will specify who is included.
In addition, class action lawsuits may require proof that you are part of the group of affected people. In this case, proof of purchase or other specified proof is needed. However, in some cases, no proof is required. In that case, you can file a claim without proving that you are part of the class of people affected. Of course, when you file a claim you are doing so under penalty of perjury. So, do not file if you do not qualify.

What’s this settlement about?
The lawsuit alleges that Murphy was incorrectly charging sales tax. In other words, certain sales at Murphy are made possible by companies reducing product prices. Other sales are covered by Murphy themselves. In this case, the portion of discounted price that Murphy paid for was being taxed. So, if you bought something on sale, then you paid tax on the entire original price.
This allegedly started on January 8, 2016, at all Murphy USA and Murphy Express stores in 24 states.
However, Murphy did not keep any portion of the sales tax it collected. They allege all of the money collected from customers as sales tax was paid to state and local government taxing authorities. In other words, Murphy denies any wrongdoing. And, the Court has not ruled that Murphy did anything wrong or violated any law.
What Products are Included?
This includes ANY discounted product. So, you’re part of the settlement if you purchased one or more discounted products from a Murphy USA or Murphy Express Store. Except stores in Missouri and Texas. And did so on or after January 8, 2016. And, you were charged and paid sales tax on the full, undiscounted price(s) of the product(s).
Who is eligible for a refund?
All persons who purchased products at Murphy stores (excluding stores in Missouri and Texas). Who were charged and paid sales tax on the full, undiscounted price of products purchased with a discount funded all or in part by Murphy, within the statutory period(s).
Is a receipt required?
No receipts are required.
How much will I get back?
Murphy will provide coupons for $1.00 off on any item sold in its stores. Two exceptions are age-restricted items, such as alcohol, lottery or tobacco products, or motor fuel. Coupons will be valid until October 27, 2020. Or, until 257,500 coupons are redeemed. For a total value of $257,500.00. Whichever occurs first.
When will I get my settlement?
Settlement Class Members who receive a Coupon by email can redeem by printing it or opening it on a mobile device. The cashier at a Murphy store will scan it. All Coupons will state on their face that they can be used only one time.
