Because, they plan to change the layout of many existing locations while adding new locations only for drive-through and pick up.
Is Starbucks Closing?
Starbucks expects to lose more than $3 billion in revenue in its fiscal third quarter 2020 due to the new coronavirus, COVID-19 pandemic. Nearly all bars and restaurants were negatively affected by the quarantine.
According to Bloomberg, Starbucks plans to accelerate the rollout of its “pickup” store concept, with smaller-format locations that don’t have customer seating. “While we had originally planned to execute this strategy over a three- to five-year timeframe, rapidly evolving customer preferences hasten the need for this concept.”
The idea is to change remaining stores and build new ones to expand curbside pickup, Drive-Thru and mobile-only pickup. Starbucks restaurants with seating may become a thing of the past.
Starbucks had planned to open 600 new locations in 2020, but has downgraded that estimate to 300, according to TechCrunch.
This news comes on the heels ofretail giants such as J.C. Penney declared bankruptcy and plans to close 200 stores, And, Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works announced they were closing 300 stores. Gordmans bankruptcy and store closings. Tuesday Morning stores declare bankruptcy. And, of course, Pier One Imports closing all of their stores. Shortly after Neiman Marcus, another department store giant, declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy amid the coronavirus pandemic.
